COMPLETE Ceylon Dress

Well…what can I say about this dress but… I love it. If I don’t say so myself.

This is by far my favourite dress to date. I love the fit and style and also the fabric. A beautiful shirt dress with insert waist, slightly dropped and curved neckline yoke. Gathers at the bust to create fullness.

I used a cotton poplin print. I needed to adjust the bodice slightly to fit. I think Colette patterns are designed for a larger bust, however I was not gifted in this department, so I took it in about 3/4″ at either side. Other than that I completely followed the pattern.

I will defiantly make this dress again in other colours. It was surprisingly easy to make. I consider myself an advanced beginner when it comes to dressmaking. This pattern is labeled an intermediate, so I guessed it would have been more difficult to make. I think the only reason was that there are 16 buttonholes to do!! I can now safely say I have conquered my buttonhole fear. I even took it one step further and went for self cover buttons. Covering buttons in the same fabric as the dress.

Next time I will either add some piping detail to the seams or use a contrasting colour for the top stitching.

What do I love about this pattern? Well there are no zips… Yay bonus!! I really love the shape of the neckline.

Throughout the making of this dress I have wondered what “Ceylon” was, well…. According to Wikipedia. British Ceylon, known contemporaneously as Ceylon, was a British crown colony between 1815 and 1948. The area it covered is now the island nation of Sri Lanka. So there, fact of the day!

Next on the agenda is Vogue 8723, lovely dress for summer. I’m still undecided on the fabric but might go for a border print?

Oh… Lastly… Thank you to my new Aussie friend Erin for taking photos of me posing around the garden in my dress. We miss you already 😔

Ooh knickers…

Well it’s been a busy couple of weeks. I thought I’d update you all on my making progresses.

Firstly I’m running a knicker making workshop for a group of crafty ladies coming on a hen weekend to Edinburgh. Knicker making workshops are always a laugh so I’m really looking forward to it. Below is some snaps from the last one.

I’ve also been working on some kiddies dresses to stock my folksy shop, which at the moment is looking a bit bare.

Above: both age 1-2years.

That was just a snippet.

I’m also going to start working on my new summer dress which will be made from the lovely floral fabric I showed you in the post ‘a new dress’ I’m so exited and will hopefully be able to show you the finished garment soon

Anyway must get busy!!!
