COMPLETE Ceylon Dress

Well…what can I say about this dress but… I love it. If I don’t say so myself.

This is by far my favourite dress to date. I love the fit and style and also the fabric. A beautiful shirt dress with insert waist, slightly dropped and curved neckline yoke. Gathers at the bust to create fullness.

I used a cotton poplin print. I needed to adjust the bodice slightly to fit. I think Colette patterns are designed for a larger bust, however I was not gifted in this department, so I took it in about 3/4″ at either side. Other than that I completely followed the pattern.

I will defiantly make this dress again in other colours. It was surprisingly easy to make. I consider myself an advanced beginner when it comes to dressmaking. This pattern is labeled an intermediate, so I guessed it would have been more difficult to make. I think the only reason was that there are 16 buttonholes to do!! I can now safely say I have conquered my buttonhole fear. I even took it one step further and went for self cover buttons. Covering buttons in the same fabric as the dress.

Next time I will either add some piping detail to the seams or use a contrasting colour for the top stitching.

What do I love about this pattern? Well there are no zips… Yay bonus!! I really love the shape of the neckline.

Throughout the making of this dress I have wondered what “Ceylon” was, well…. According to Wikipedia. British Ceylon, known contemporaneously as Ceylon, was a British crown colony between 1815 and 1948. The area it covered is now the island nation of Sri Lanka. So there, fact of the day!

Next on the agenda is Vogue 8723, lovely dress for summer. I’m still undecided on the fabric but might go for a border print?

Oh… Lastly… Thank you to my new Aussie friend Erin for taking photos of me posing around the garden in my dress. We miss you already 😔

The Pledge

So I decided to set myself a new challenge, the challenge of all challenges for a woman who likes to shop. ‘THE PLEDGE’ I pledge that I will not buy any item of clothing for the next six months with the exception of thrifted goods and handmade. In the process I will make many of my own clothes and refashion some of the clothes I have already in the closet that are unworn! This does not include accessories and footwear (I’ve not mastered how to make a pair of shoes yet… Nor will I ever probably master this).

So on the schedule to make is my summer dress I keep ranting about. I will be using New Look pattern 6094 and the gorgeous floral mandors fabric. If it turns out well I may make a few more of this dress.

The Colette violet blouse and the Colette clover ankle grazers which are wardrobe staples. I’ve been looking on Flickr at some of the variations of the violet blouse and found some stunning ones here, here and again here.

I also love the free colette sorbetto top pattern, which is FREE bonus!!! There’s some lovely examples here and here.

P.S. This pledge does not include the rest of my family, just me, myself and I. Hopefully I will be sharing pictures with you soon of my makes and refashions!!
